Description
A large brown goose with a black neck and a white chinstrap. Size, bill shape, and overall tone vary among subspecies. It occupies a wide range of open and wet habitats, from city parks and golf courses to marshes and Arctic tundra. Usually seen in family groups or flocks, and often mixed with Cackling Geese in parts of central and western North America. In most cases it is bigger, with a longer neck and bill than Cackling, though there is some overlap between the smallest Canada and the largest Cackling. Very common across the U.S. and Canada, scarce in Mexico, and introduced to parts of Europe where it is now well established. Its loud, honking calls are familiar, especially from migrating flocks flying in a classic V formation.
