A large, elegant grebe with a long neck and a slim yellow-orange bill. The black cap stops just above the red eye, leaving the eye set within a broad white face. Its elongated grey body sits low in the water. In the breeding season it favors marshy lakes, where it builds floating nests from vegetation. During winter it is most often seen on coastal bays and open ocean, though it also occurs on inland lakes. It closely resembles Western Grebe and the two often gather in mixed groups across overlapping ranges, though this species is usually less numerous. Overall it appears paler, particularly on the face and flanks. The bill is a brighter orange-yellow and lacks the darker lower edge typical of Western. Some individuals show mixed features and are best left unidentified
