Description
A bold and familiar bird of woodland, forests, parks, gardens, and hedged farmland. It readily comes to feeders and often nests in boxes. Its plumage is unmistakable, with bright white cheeks framed by a black cap and bib. The male shows a wider black stripe down the belly than the female, while juveniles seen in summer and early autumn have a yellowish wash to the face and overall duller tones. Across most of its range the underparts are vivid yellow, though the Central Asian “Turkestan Tit” form has a white belly. It is noticeably larger and more strongly marked than the Eurasian Blue Tit, which is often found nearby. Its voice is distinctive, featuring a high, rising-and-falling “tsee-dee-tsee-dee-tsee-dee” song along with harsh, chattering scolds.
