A critically endangered grebe restricted to Lake Junín in the high Andes of central Peru. Adults show a grey-and-white pattern with a striking red eye, while juveniles appear more brownish overall. It closely resembles the much more widespread Silvery Grebe, but is subtly larger, with a longer bill, slimmer neck, darker sides, and a paler bill. These distinctions are easiest to notice when both species are viewed together for comparison. It is difficult to observe well from the shore, and close views typically require access by boat.
