A fairly large thrush with grey-brown upperparts and whitish underparts marked by rounded dark spots. The tail shows small white corners, a feature not present on the noticeably smaller Song Thrush. In flight it appears paler and greyer overall compared with the darker-toned Song Thrush. It occurs in many wooded settings, including parks and moorland with hedgerows and taller trees, and often feeds out in the open on lawns and grassy verges, sometimes far from cover. Its rich, flowing song is closer in tone to that of a Eurasian Blackbird than a Song Thrush, and it also gives a distinctive dry rattling call
