
A large raptor that is predominantly white and often seen gliding over lakes, rivers, and coastal waters while hunting for fish. It has an almost worldwide distribution, occurring on every continent except Antarctica. The head and underparts are mostly white, contrasting with a dark brown back. In flight, the wings are held in a shallow bend at the wrist, creating a distinctive “M” shape. Bulky stick nests are frequently built on channel markers, poles, and raised platforms near water.
